SPA bienvenu.
Service: a lot left to be desired and not in line with the price paid per night for our stay. Breakfast is ridiculously expensive 25 euros a head for adults and 15 euros a head for. 1.5 year old and a 3 year old. Was also charged €26 extra for a bottle of still water and 1 breakfast tea bag with a teaspoon of milk which we were told was on the house when we asked to have some tea and water replenished in our second and final night of our stay.
Hotel itself - it's ok- lacking in atmosphere and has an odd toilet poo smell throughout the bottom floor. The carpet and interior decor needs cleaning/upgrading.
Room- big and spacious but lacking in the basics and they are charging through the nose for it (see tea comment above) no fridge, no amenities you would expect for the price of the hotel.
Would I advise anyone else to stay here - absolutely not. There are many many better value options with friendlier staff around petit France location. Definitely not luxury, nor value for money.
You didn't change even one night of our two-night stay, which I already paid for during high season. However, our hotel in Zurich changed it directly even though we selected the same option. If I had to summarize the management style of your hotel in one word, OPPORTUNISM
Service at the hotel was exceptional especially as we stayed a Saturday night and didn't make any reservations for dinner. We provided a restaurant name with the employee on reception to call and make a dinner booking but when we returned mid-afternoon, he told us it was full. This kind employee didn't give up and end up calling another six restaurants on our behalf to make us a dinner reservation. He provided us such good service, much more than necessary.
I should also mention that when we checked in early, before the official check-in time, I was concerned our luggage might not be in the hotel when we returned to check-in (because I'd read reviews of guests not having their luggage when checking in). in our case, when we did finally check-in, our luggage had been taken to our room, in a section of the hotel without an elevator. This was a positive and reassuring start of the stay.
The hotel is in a perfect location in Petite France but if you walk from Gare Centrale in Strasbourg, be warned that Google Maps will have you walk on many cobbled streets which is unpleasant when wheeling a suitcase. It's less than fifteen minutes but it's not fun.
Our stay included the buffet breakfast which is worthwhile because there's plenty of choice for omnivores and vegetarians. There's breakfast cereal, yoghurt, fresh fruit, juices, local still and sparkling water, breads, pastries, sliced meats and a few hot items (eggs, bacon and sausage). You are asked if you want coffee or tea and it is brought to the table freshly made.
As a hot tea drinker I made good use of the electric tea kettle in the room. Tea bags are provided but I always travel with my own tea bags
The commitment to service at the Hotel is so great that when I asked for wine glasses, after a day spent in Eguisheim, famous for Alsace wine, the employee didn't hesitate to provide glasses but insisted on me bringing the bottle of wine to him to open. One cannot visit Alsace and not buy the local wine so I suppose the Hotel staff are accustomed to guests buying wine outside the Hotel even though there is a bar there.
I would certainly stay at Le Bouclier d'Or again and recommend it to visitors to Strasbourg.
