Le château est construit sur un rocher. C'est le premier exemple en France de construction Renaissance à partir d'un château médiéval. Il comporte un donjon médiéval, des ponts-levis, des fortifications, mais le corps de logis est Renaissance. Il y a également une chapelle. Demeure royale, il a appartenu à Henri Boyer, François Ier, Jean Escoubleau de Sourdis et Richelieu. Le site est en cours de rénovation. Lors de la visite, vous en apprendrez plus sur son histoire et son évolution.

This is a unique restoration project following decades of work by mainly two people. It is a herculean task starting from almost a total ruin. Most of the work has been to stabilize existing structure, so like at Pompeii, you have to use your imagination and sketches to visualize much of its original beauty. The story behind the chateau's development and restoration is key, so you need a guide and best be able to understand intermediate French. The mason who has worked on the chateau for decades gave us the tour including insights into its original designs based on years of digging and observation. There isn't a regular docent, so best to contact the email listed on the website to arrange a time to visit. Definitely worth the effort.
