In the summer of 2022, my wife and I were visiting Toulouse. We had recently arrived from Canada and were extremely tired and jetlagged from all of the travel. All we wanted was to find a little bistro to sit and have some nice wine and food. Unfortunately, while trying to find a place to eat, we got a little bit lost and ended up wandering the streets of Toulouse for far too long. We were also travelling in August and we were not yet used to the heat. Fortunately, using some broken and desperate communication skills, a local had let us know that this Bistro was close by. They also told us though, that we were outside of the dining hours and that they may not have any food available yet.
When we arrived the waitstaff could tell that we were very tired and hungry. We had arrived at approximately 1745 and, even though they weren’t open yet, they quickly got us a seat and brought us over ice water, cold beer and some bread. We were so tired that we forgot all of our French vocabulary but the waitress was extremely helpful and understanding of our broken French. It is difficult to describe how tired we felt but once we sat down, it felt like we found an oasis in the middle of a desert. Menus followed shortly thereafter, and we were treated to some wonderful seafood. The waitress treated us like guests of honour! We had never been more grateful for someone taking care of us! We were truly cared for and we fully enjoyed our experience at this bistro!
A few of days later, we stopped into this bistro again because it was actually quite close to where we were staying and because we had such a positive experience last time. We had another wonderful meal but when we went to pay, the debit card machine wasn’t working so we needed to pay by cash. Unfortunately, because of our own poor planning, we didn’t actually have enough cash with us to pay for meal. To make matters worse, we were planning on travelling to a new city the following day and we didn’t know how or when we were going to be able to pay. From our discussions with the waitresses, we had developed a rapport and they simply asked us to return when we ere able to pay for the meal. No big discussion about if we would return or that we should leave any sort of collateral. We were shocked! Fortunately, we had extra cash at the apartment that we immediately brought back to pay for the meal. We were so grateful (again!) that the waitstaff was so kind to us! It had such a huge impact on our trip and we would love to return to Toulouse if we get the opportunity.
