Ce haut lieu de la photographie européenne a pour mission de diffuser et conserver la photographie contemporaine. La collection permanente couvre la fin des années 1950 à aujourd'hui, regroupant plus de quinze mille œuvres issues de la production photographique internationale (Robert Frank, Raymond Depardon, Irving Penn, Henri Cartier-Bresson...). Elle est complétée par de nombreuses expositions temporaires. La maison abrite également un auditorium, une bibliothèque et une vidéothèque.
