Ce fut la première grande salle modulable de la capitale, avant Le Zénith et le POPB. Ouvert en 1960, le Palais des Sports a accueilli des événements importants dans le domaine de la boxe, par exemple, de même que les prestations des basketteurs des Harlem Globe-Trotters. Cet espace en forme d’arène pouvant recevoir entre deux mille cinq cents et quatre mille six cents spectateurs s’est également fait connaître en donnant à voir et à entendre les Beatles, Pink Floyd, Elton John, Johnny Hallyday… Et puis aussi en permettant la réalisation de spectacles king size comme ceux de Robert Hossein. C’est là aussi qu’ont été créées des chorégraphies de Maurice Béjart, Roland Petit, Rudolf Noureev, des comédies musicales telles que Les Misérables et où ont fait étape les troupes de Holiday On Ice ou du Cirque de Moscou. Nettement moins drôle : le Palais des Sports fut réquisitionné, de même que le stade Coubertin, pour que l’on y parque des ressortissants algériens interpellés lors de la terrible nuit du 17 octobre 1961. Certains y décédèrent. Aujourd'hui, les comédies musicales à gros budgets et les humoristes se produisent dans ce palais qui a vieilli mais qui résiste...
