When I joined the program in 2021, I had high hopes of building a sustainable career in photography. I took the business aspect of the course seriously, eager to equip myself with the skills necessary to make a living in the industry. However, after three years of struggling to establish myself, I’ve made the difficult decision to leave the profession entirely.

One of my biggest disappointments with the course was its lack of comprehensive business education, particularly for students outside of France. Given that Spèos is marketed as an international institution, I expected a curriculum that considered the realities of working in different countries. Instead, the business side of the course was overwhelmingly focused on the French market, which left me unprepared for navigating the industry in the UK.

Beyond the curriculum itself, the lack of support—both during my time at the school and after graduating—was shocking. There was little to no career guidance, networking opportunities, or meaningful follow-up to help students transition into professional work. For the amount of money invested in this program, I expected far more. Instead, I’ve been left feeling like I was sold an unrealistic vision of what was possible, with no real-world preparation to back it up.

Looking ahead, I think it’s crucial that Spèos reassesses how it markets itself and the value it provides to students, especially given how rapidly the photography industry is evolving with AI. The profession is changing, and schools need to ensure they are preparing students for the realities of the industry rather than selling an outdated dream.

I hope this feedback is taken into consideration, as I would hate for future students to invest so much in a program that ultimately leaves them without the tools they need to succeed.

Hands down one of my best professional experiences when it come to education.

Amazing teachers who specialise in their domains and actually give a damn (and yes, they speak impeccable English despite the fact that you are in France). They taught me a plethora of things and tested me until they became second nature.

Industry standard equipment. An epic studio space. A quaint exhibition space. A jaw dropping list of visiting professionals through out the year (especially if you are enrolled for the RNCP). Round the clock help when it comes to everyday life as a foreign student in France. Some of the loveliest of people at the administrations office. On top of that, you always have an opportunity to talk to the director of the school in case you have any grievances.

Although I must say, your entire experience depends largely on your batch mates as well. I was luck enough to be surrounded by some incredibly like minded people over the span for 2 years (2015 - 2017). I walked in as a student and left with family.
