THORNTON'S ARCADE

The arcade spans three stories and features a glass roof. Positioned at the northern end is a clock equipped with a mechanism crafted by William Potts and Sons of Leeds. The clock showcases four life-size figures inspired by characters from Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe, including Richard Coeur-de-Lion and Friar Tuck, who chime the hours, and Robin Hood and Gurth the Swineherd, responsible for striking the quarters. These figures were skillfully crafted by the Leeds sculptor John Wormald Appleyard. At the opposite end of the arcade, there is a sculpted head of a woman.
