We had a wonderful stay at the hotel. Lovely breakfast with all you can wish for. The dining area and lounge are beautiful with eye for detail. The rooms were okay. Very neat and tidy. Location was so so given you had to drive quite far and there were little dining possibilities in the area. Great service.

Our recent stay at the Château d’Étoges in Champagne, France was a charming and memorable experience. Nestled in the countryside, this 17th-century château exudes historic character with its gently creaking floorboards, towering ceiling heights, and grand staircases—all reminders of its storied past. The views out the majestic windows and the constant, soothing murmur of fountains in the moat created a tranquil ambiance. While we initially worried that the atmosphere might lean toward the overly formal or stuffy, we were pleased to discover a place that is both characterful and comfortable. |We had opted for a package that included meals in the château’s formal dining room, and though we expected a perhaps too-refined or too rigid dining experience, we were pleasantly surprised. The cuisine was delicious and the service was impeccable. A particular highlight was our interaction with Zoe, one of the servers. Her professionalism was matched by her warmth. She helped us navigate the menu with both ease and humor, bridging the language gap with grace. Our conversation with her was a memorable part of the meal—not just for her helpful suggestions, but for the genuine connection we felt. The evening ended on an especially kind note when she tracked us down shortly after dinner to return a pair of sunglasses left behind. It’s gestures like that, and people like Zoe, that elevate a beautiful stay into something special.

My wife, our 8-month-old daughter, our dog, and I stayed at the château for one night while exploring the area.

The hotel is truly beautiful, both in its setting and in the attention to detail throughout the building and interior. We arrived in the afternoon and, unfortunately, dogs weren’t allowed in the fine dining restaurant. So, we opted for dinner at the brasserie instead.

Our room was very nice—clean and beautifully decorated in keeping with the overall style of the château. The bathroom featured both a shower and a bathtub, blending modern comfort with a contemporary design.

Breakfast was served on the ground floor. Unfortunately, our dog wasn’t allowed there either, but he was happy to enjoy some alone time in the room. The breakfast offered a lovely selection of all the usual items, and it was clear that only high-quality products were used—especially the butter, yogurt, and apple juice.

The experience was truly memorable, and I would highly recommend this wonderful place. However, one thing to note (though it wasn’t an issue for us) is that there’s no elevator, as it’s an old building. This meant carrying bags, a baby, and a stroller up and down the stairs a few times. Also, because the château is quite secluded, dining options are basically limited to what the hotel provides.

Prachtig kasteel. Heel rustig.

Not Worth It

We recently stayed at a chateau in France, and unfortunately, the experience did not meet our expectations—especially considering the rate of €560 per night. While the property itself is beautiful and the dining staff were friendly, several critical issues made our stay disappointing.

Unwelcoming Reception Staff
From the moment we arrived, the attitude of the reception staff was unfriendly, if not outright arrogant. We were neither warmly welcomed nor treated with the courtesy expected at a four-star establishment. For example, after a rain shower, we wanted to sit outside but found the chairs were still wet. When we asked for cushions or something to dry them off, the male receptionist simply suggested we sit elsewhere rather than assist. When we insisted on using the other terrace, he reluctantly gave us two towels, but with a very unfriendly facial expression. For a place that charges such high rates, this lack of helpfulness and courtesy was unacceptable.

Poor Safety and Fire Alarm Response
At 6 a.m., a fire alarm went off. Our room was on the top floor, so we got dressed and left the room, as did our neighbors. Once outside, we were surprised to find no staff present, no one coordinating an evacuation, and no communication whatsoever. Some guests stood around looking confused, while others stayed in their rooms. Hours later, during checkout, the reception made no mention of the incident—no apology, no explanation. This is particularly concerning in a historic 17th-century building, where clear evacuation procedures and responsible staff are essential. The lack of response showed a serious disregard for guest safety and basic service standards.

Locked Doors and Poor Communication
Another issue arose later that evening when, at midnight, the garden illumination was shut off and the main reception door was locked with a key. No instructions were given in advance, and for a while, we feared we couldn’t get back into the building. Eventually, we discovered another entrance that was left open—but no one had informed us about it. The same receptionist saw us sitting outside as he left for the night but made no effort to explain anything. Once again, this demonstrated a lack of basic communication and concern for guest comfort and security.

Aesthetic vs. Reality
Although the chateau is indeed a beautiful structure, the grounds were not as well-maintained as shown in the pictures. The garden near the fountains was overgrown, and only a narrow path was cut through the grass—making the area feel neglected and less usable.

Positives
The room was clean, and we appreciated the friendly service at breakfast and dinner. These, however, were not enough to outweigh the negative aspects of our stay.

Conclusion
In summary, this property does not provide the level of service, safety, or hospitality that one would expect—let alone at this price point. For these reasons, I would not return and cannot recommend it to others. Sadly, it is simply not worth it.

We spent a few days in a real castle with rich history and magnificent decor. The level of service was exceptional — the staff were incredibly kind, attentive, and professional. The piano adds a special charm to the whole experience. Walking through the garden was a pleasure in itself. And the dinners at their gastronomic restaurant were truly exquisite.
We’ll definitely come back.

The last hotel on our European adventure and one of the best. A stunning Chateau in the middle of the French countryside. Beautiful grounds and buildings along with a wonderful room and attentive and friendly staff. We didn't eat at the restaurant as it was closed on a Monday, but had dinner at their bistro round the corner, L'Atelier, which was perfect for a delicious supper. All in all, a fabulous place.

During a Sunday walk, we decided to quench our thirst at the château. We sat down on the terrace. No one came. We got up and went to the reception to let them know we were there. We were handed the drinks menu and asked to wait for the server’s return — who, after a good twenty minutes, never came back... what a shameful lack of courtesy... a team and service that seriously deserve to be called into question...
