My husband and I did the 3 day/2 night “Deep Mountain Hilltribe Explorer” trek out of Luang Prabang. This feedback/advice mostly pertains to this tour, but I’m sure it will also be relevant to other homestay treks:

1. Bring toilet paper (there is none for the entire trek and none at the home stays). Luckily we brought some but we weren’t advised to bring any, so it’s lucky we did! It’s also squat toilets and cold bucket showers, so be prepared! (The cold water is very nice after a long day of hiking!)

2. The sleeping conditions are very tough. You sleep on the floor in a communal room with the family. The “mattress” they give you is extremely hard (expect sore hips if you sleep on your side) and the room itself is very noisy - our first night we shared the room with 10 people, including children and a baby who cried all night. People wake up at about 4 a.m. and start playing music on their phones. Next time I would bring ear plugs and a camping sleeping mattress to sleep on, as well as a sleep sheet and my own pillowcase as the blanket/pillow provided were really dirty. That said, it’s likely homestay dependent as the pillows and blanket at our second homestay smelled clean and that place was quieter (we only shared a room with three people).

3. We are vegetarian so the food was repetitive, but I found it tasty regardless. I don’t know what it would be like for meat eaters, but I think next time I would bring more snacks and energy bars.

4. The hiking on this particular trail is very nice with lots of up and down. We’re strong hikers and shaved an hour off the estimated hike time each day. The last day particularly involves hiking down a steep road for two hours, so if you have sensitive knees, bring hiking sticks.

Overall it was a wonderful experience, and truly interesting to see how the locals live, and the landscapes are lovely. The Lao people in the villages were kind, warm, and welcoming. For whatever trip you decide to do, ask for the guide Aaron. He was informative, helpful, and truly excited to show us his culture.

My wife and I have just returned from the 2 day 1 night discovery trek with Tiger Trails setting off from Nong Khiaw. Harp who runs the office at Nong Khiaw was super helpful and organised an excellent trip. Moon our guide was experienced and knowledgeable. The first day wasn’t strenuous, walking for around 2 hours before reaching the village where we would stayed the night. The afternoon was spent fishing before enjoying a bbq to eat our catch and some Laos Whiskey in the beautiful setting. Back to the village to spend time playing games with kids and enjoying a beer Laos in the hammock before a delicious evening meal with our hosts. Day 2 was about 5 hours trekking through jungle, rice paddies and villages and a walk up to the Tadmok Waterfall. It was the pleasant boat ride back to Nong Khiaw. Apart from the first lunch stop and the Tadmock waterfall we didn’t see many others, which was nice. Highly recommended tour.

I used this company to do two 1 day trips, the Fairtrek hike and the Chicken Run bike ride. The commutation beforehand was ok. The office is located on Kingkitsarath Road and Google Maps is accurate with its location. This is where your tour will leave from if you don’t have the supplement for a hotel pick up.
The Fairtrek day is good, not too difficult but you will be trekking for 6-7 hours (including stops) Although I’m not normally interested in culture I nevertheless found the villages fascinating as time seems to have stood still, particularly in the Mong village where only 5 families live. Here as well as no electricity there is no running water either. The final village is also where the home stay is which is just a basic room, mattress on the floor and a mosquito net. My guide was Khao and he was informative without going overboard. We walked at my pace and I was not hurried at any point.
The chicken run is basically the Chomphet loop (see Google maps) It was also really good as very few tourists cross over this side of the Mekong so lots of children wave and shout Sabadee as you pass. There are plenty of hills but none are particularly long and you’ll finish between 1430 & 1530. Oun was my guide on this one and again we went at my pace and I was not hurried
Overall two excellent days out and I would definitely use this company again
