The Grande Roche of Paarl has become a legend on the local hospitality scene for having won such a formidable array of awards and culinary accolades since its opening in January 1992. In 1993 the Grande Roche, together with all its farmland and restored historical buildings, was declared a national monument.
This gem of South Africa is set on a gentle slope with a view of the vineyards and rugged mountains and it is the hotel’s subtle attention to detail that sets it apart from the rest.
Grande Roche has received a remarkable collection of honours in its relatively brief history:
Accommodation
• Within only a few short months of opening, Grande Roche received its full 5-star status - scoring the highest marks on the score sheet.
• The Grande Roche was the first hotel in South Africa to be awarded the Silver Classification according to SATOUR’s (South African Tourism Board) new national grading system.
• Grande Roche was honoured by the Relais & Châteaux, a select Paris-based association of hoteliers and restaurateurs, in November 1994 when it became the fourth South African establishment to have membership conferred on it, joining the prestigious ranks of 459 members in 51 countries throughout the world. Strict selection criteria are based on the personality of the owner/manager, the secluded location of the hotel, as well as the maintenance of the highest standards of hotelkeeping, top quality cuisine and wine list, outstanding amenities and accommodation facilities.
• The SATOUR Tourism Award for Hotel of the Year 1995 – the first hotel in South Africa to receive this award for excellence in hospitality and for those committed to service excellence. Grande Roche won the Hotel of the Year award for its incredible attention to detail, impeccable grounds, excellent food, and superb levels of luxury.
• In 2004 silver rating and environmental certification from the Heritage Environ Rating Programme!
• In February, 2010 the Grande Roche Hotel became a member of the Mantis Group, a vast selection of exclusive hotels and game reserves.
Destination
• Grande Roche was named as a Worldwide Suburban Retreat in Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report 1996 (considered to be the “World Connoisseurs’ guide to peaceful and unspoiled places”) as well as being selected one of the author’s Favourite International Destinations for 1996.
• The Grande Roche Hotel is the only one in the Cape winelands to be selected by America's top network of travel agents Virtuoso – specialists in the art of Travel in 1999 and named the “Best of the Best” in their exclusive selection of the top hotels they represent.
• Grande Roche was ranked among the 10 top wine country hotels of the world in America's Food and Wine magazine (October 1998) as an ideal wine getaway – and was described as "South Africa's most hedonistic property".
• In the 2004 “World’s Best Awards” Grande Roche was ranked in the Top 50 Hotels.
• In 2005 Grande Roche was selected as one of the “100 Best Romantic Resorts of the World”.
• In the June 2005 edition of Travel and Leisure, Grande Roche was designated one of the top ten properties in Africa and Middle East in the World’s Best Service Award.
• In the Conde Nast Traveller Readers Choice Awards 2005 – Top 10 Hotels Africa and Middle East - Grande Roche was rated third with 91 points (October 2005)
• In 2008 once again America’s leading magazine Condé Nast Traveler (Oct 2008), awarded Paarl’s Grande Roche Hotel the 2nd best resort in Africa and best travel experience in the South African Winelands. In the Best of the Best Top 100 ranking for 2008, Grande Roche achieved 8th position in the world and is the reader’s choice as the best hotel resort in South Africa! Its 32 633 readers rated and ranked their travel experiences world-wide and Grande Roche scored 96.9 points.
• In 2009 the Grande Roche Hotel was again awarded the following by America’s leading magazine Condé Nast Traveler (Oct 2009): The 05th best resort in Africa and the 29th best property in the world.
• In 2010, the Grande Roche was named one of the world’s top establishments and noted with the Fodor’s Choice Distinction by leading American guidebook publishers Fodors.
Fine Dining and Bosman’s Restaurant
• Bosman's Restaurant was one of the first restaurants in South Africa to be accepted for the American Express Platinum Card Fine Dining programme which was launched in SA in 1999. Since 1999 Bosman’s Restaurant has won the American Express Platinum Fine Dining Restaurant Award every year, and in 2008 American Express honoured Bosman’s Restaurant with the 10-year Platinum Fine Dining Programme Award.
• Grande Roche was the winner of the 1999 Cape Cigar Hospitality Award. In collaboration with cigar aficionado, the late Theo Rudman, Grande Roche organised the first South African Cigar club at Bosman's Restaurant.
• Bosman’s Restaurant was named as South Africa's top de luxe restaurant by the American Express/Style magazine for two years in succession.
• In 1993 the German gourmet magazine VIF, scored it 18 out of 20 points and in Feinschmecker, it scored 3 out of 4 points for Bosman’s and 4 out of 5 points for the hotel in 1997.
• Bosman’s Restaurant was also rated among the Top Ten Restaurants of South Africa in the 1996 Perrier Restaurant Guide and in Flying Springbok magazine.
• Bosman's Restaurant has received the official blazon from the highly respected worldwide association of gastronomes, the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs - a guild that was formed in France in the Middle Ages to promote all the arts - including the culinary arts. Bosman’s was selected South Africa’s best Chaîne Restaurant for 1996 by the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs.
• Bosman's at the Grande Roche was listed as one of the "Editor's Top 10 Restaurants” - for seven consecutive years by one of South Africa's leading restaurant guides - Eat Out - in the 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and the 2006 edition.
• Bosman’s Restaurant was the only South African restaurant to make the top ten in the world listings featured in the New Straits Times, a Malaysian newspaper (16 February 2002). The list was compiled by Hannah Abisheganaden, director/principal of foodies ‘n friends (website: www.foodiesnfriends.com.my), in a three-part series on the World’s Best Restaurants.
• The Business Day Restaurant of the Year Award 1994, 1998, 2002 and in 2005 - for its outstanding cuisine in Bosman’s Restaurant - endorses once again the standards for which Grande Roche has become famous. In 2004 it was first runner-up for this award. For the first time ever the 2005 award was a tie – and Bosman’s and La Colombe shared the top spot.
• 2010: South African Tourism awarded Bosman’s Restaurant the No. 1 fine dining Restaurant in SA.
• 2010: Bosman’s Restaurant nominated in fourth place on the Top 10 list of the Eat Out Awards.
Wine List
• In the September 2002 edition of the American magazine Wine Enthusiast Grande Roche was selected as one of the Top Eight resorts with great wine lists world-wide.
• Bosman's Restaurant has six times been the only restaurant to gain five stars for its wine list in Wine magazine's Top 100 Restaurants – the latest being the 2005 edition. It also received a five star rating for its food and ambience and was also the only restaurant to attain full marks for all categories in the 2004 guide. In 2005 Bosman’s was also presented with the award for the Top Wine List by Wine magazine’s Top 100 Restaurants.
• In 1992 and 1993 Bosman’s Restaurant won the Diners Club award for the best Wine List of the year and in 2000, 2001 and 2002 it received the Diners Club Diamond Award for its wine list. In 2005 the Diners Club International Wine List of the Year Awards were re-introduced and Bosman’s received an award of Excellence while Bistro Allegro received a Gold Award. For two years running in 2006 and 2007 Bosman’s Restaurant received the Award of Excellence while and Bistro Allegro received the Platinum Award in 2006 and the Gold Award in 2007. In 2008 and 2009 Grande Roche excelled at the Diners Club Awards with Bosman’s Restaurant receiving the top award, Diamond, and Bistro Allegro, Platinum.
• 2010: Bosman’s Restaurant won the top Diners Club Award as Best Wine List in South Africa.
Both the Bosman’s Wine List and the wine list for the Bistro Allegro won the top awards, namely Diamond.
One of the hotel’s Chef de Rangs also won the South African Wine Steward of the Year Award.
• In 2008 Grande Roche won the Wine Spectator’s "Best of Award of Excellence" and was described by Wine Spectator as the restaurant with the best wine experience in South Africa. Bosman's is the only restaurant in South Africa to receive this Best of Award of Excellence.
• In 2009 and 2010 the Grande Roche again won the Wine Spectator’s “Best of Award of Excellence” and is again the only restaurant in South Africa to receive this Best of Award of Excellence.
